Scottish Highlands

We spent the night in Inverness, can’t say it appeared particularly nice, but in fairness we didn’t go walking around (having had a rather busy day yesterday) and it was raining etc.

Took a drive to Loch Ness in the morning, which is absolutely HUGE! (36km at its longest point and 132m deep). We were thinking “it’s not surprising that it has been so difficult to spot Nessie” when ….

You’ll have to excuse the shoddy camerawork, we saw movement really far away and Jarrah was in such a rush to get a photo, she couldn’t hold the camera steady. Still, exciting stuff!

We didn’t think it would be possible to top that experience but we took a drive to the Isle of Skye with a slight detour to Applecross Bay via the Pass of the Cattle (Bealach na Bà) – what dramatic, rugged, stunning scenery (thanks for the recommendation Liz!).

It was somewhat of a drive – most of the two hour circular route is via a single lane road that winds up then down a mountain and then up and down again and it’s fair to say that the roads are littered with potholes which made for some interesting moments.

We were delighted to finally come across a couple of highland cattle (Scots: Heilan coo), we’ve been on the look out for them for days. Unfortunately, could only get a pic of one of them.

Finally arrived at our accommodation for the night – a lovely bed & breakfast overlooking the water complete with a view of the Loch and ruins of a castle, fishing boats and the shriek of seagulls.
