Italy

Burano

On our second day in Venice, we decided to visit Murano (glass factories) and Burano (hand made lace place).

Long story short, nightmare getting to both places, water buses packed and another very hot day. Unless you’re in the market for some Murano glass objects, I’d say don’t bother going. The centre of Murano is pretty “meh” and the surrounding neighbourhoods (which we got to know intimately on foot) were close to derelict.

Burano on the other hand is well worth a visit – the absolute epitome of cute, quaint and picturesque. It’s colourful, cute and clean. But maybe take a water taxi rather than the water bus … unless you go in winter, which is probably good idea.

And with that we say farewell to Italy. Mixed emotions … think it is fair to say we have a love-hate relationship with Italy. When you get to interact with Italians one-on-one, they are lovely, friendly and helpful … but absolute arseholes on the road. Italy has some of the most beautiful places (Florence, Tuscany, Capri, Venice) but a whole lot of poverty, ugliness and litter in between.

Arrivederci Italia, zdravo Hrvatska!!

Murano and Burano look very pretty – it was freezing when I was there in January a couple of decades ago. I don’t even recall seeing the colourful buildings! Italy doesn’t draw me to visit like, say Germany did. Safe travels onwards!
