Glacier 3000 & Vevey

We were quite delighted to find on arrival in Montreux that we get a Montreux card which gets us FREE bus and train travel, FREE entry to all museums and FREE entry to Glacier 3000. We decided to take advantage of as much as possible given that our little 9 day jaunt in Switzerland was over-budget by a whopping 30%, despite getting several meals from the petrol station!! (Germany by comparison, was under by 10%).

So, first up we took a drive up into the mountains again and took two gondola rides to Glacier 3000. Not quite as high or as cold as Jungfrau as it was a balmy 6C at the top.

The main reason for a trip up another mountain was the unique suspension bridge that gives you the most amazing views. Hard to capture in photos but take a quick look at a 15 sec video here to fully appreciate “the walk” (and then you can all tell us how incredibly brave we are!).

Obviously not much snow at this time of the year and there were some rain clouds rolling in, so visibility wasn’t great.

Bottom pic is taken through zooty binoculars that label each mountain as you move it around – you can just see the general direction of Mont Blanc, but covered in said rain clouds at the time.

Taking full advantage of our freebies, we took a 2 hour boat cruise zig-zagging across Lake Geneva and hopped off at Vevey (next little town along the lake) to see some sights we’d read about before catching the bus back to Montreux. Nice little town, a bit cheaper than Montreux but a lot quieter – which has its pros and cons. However, glad we stayed in Montreux despite the hotel room with no aircon or fan and a bar fridge pumping out hot air all day and night.

Charlie Chaplin made Vevey his home for the last 24 years of his life and not only is there a statue of him on the promenade but there is an entire museum in his former home.

Forgot to mention in our last post, met a local gent by the name of Gunnar on our first evening in Montreux who has a son in Adelaide (one he only found out about once said son was an adult), and his current partner is an Australian from Melbourne. Invited us out to their home in the mountains (where they also run an Airbnb), but we ran out of time. We bumped into him a couple of nights later (he likes to hang out at our favourite drinking hole) and he’s promised us free accommodation “when” we return to Montreux.

And with that it is “Au Revoir” to Switzerland and onward to Italy tomorrow!
