East Side Gallery

The East Side Gallery consists of a series of murals painted directly on a 1,316 m long remnant of the Berlin Wall, on Mühlenstraße in Friedrichshain-Kreuzberg (Central Berlin). The gallery has official status as a “Denkmal”, or heritage-protected landmark.

Below are some pics of the artworks that appealed to us the most (see if you recognise anyone):

So glad to see the portrait of Andrei Sakharov. Both he and his wife were amazing human beings. While we were living in Moscow, they were sent into internal exile. Despite that, my husband George was able to send a letter from Sakharov to our President who read it at the UN for all to hear about what needed to be done to get the Soviet Union to change and be more open. I reckon that it did not endear the Sakharovs to the authorities, but it did eventually cause a meltdown within the country. Russia will always be a little bit “closed” to the west and western liberal ideas, especially in the area of governance.
