Broads Bouncing across Boris’ Britain

Last Sunday night my good friend Boris announced some easing of COVID restrictions in the UK w.e.f. Wednesday, 13th May – two of which were good news for us:

1. Unlimited outdoor exercise/activity (instead of once per day);
2. You can drive to places to exercise and no limit on distance

SO – first thing Monday, I was on the internet to book a car for collection on Tuesday afternoon.

I just want to mention here that within 10 minutes of picking up the car, I was hooted at not once but bloody TWICE – and for no justifiable reason! Not only would this never have happened 25 years ago (oh England what have you become?!) but we didn’t even get honked at in the USA (where it would have been more than justified on many occasions)!!

Wednesday saw us off again with the usual trials and tribulations of GPS navigation and whilst a car is considerably easier to get around in than a motor home (especially 3 point turns), there were some peculiarities observed:

Roundabouts with traffic lights, where you can travel “across” the roundabout … legally …. on a road … so is it a roundabout? I don’t think so! I’m sorry but you can’t have it both ways – either it is a round about or it isn’t!

Not a single speed limit in sight but lots of (a) cops and (b) speed cameras. I then vaguely recalled that the sign below is somehow linked to a speed but for the life of me, can’t recall what. I’m also positively (almost) sure that I didn’t see a single one of these for the 20 miles we travelled on the M40! I’m assuming “I’m “Staylian” will be enough of an explanation to avoid a speeding fine.

Curved arrows on our side of the road, pointing towards us? What the hell? And no, I did not take this photo!

Parking on the side of the road, facing any direction – there are sooo many reasons why this is wrong 🙂

Zig-Zaggy lines on the road that look like someone’s ECG print out (or Boris’ popularity polls)

This, however, was our favourite road sign of the day … we all know and love that England has so much history, going back so many hundreds of years and love that they’ve kept all their old buildings, traditions etc, but we did not know until today, that apparently the police are using vintage cameras!

So where did we go on our first day out after 7 weeks in isolation?
Oxford!
Where are the pics? Watch this space!!

Disclaimer!!

Before you all tell me to “go back home” – I’m not complaining! Just pointing out some things that are different. I love England and today was definitely nowhere near as traumatic as our first five weeks in the motor-home in the USA!

You prob know by now but the white circle with black diagonal line is “National Speed Limit applies” – usually 70mph on motorways and 60mph on single carriageway – So not one specific speed, just depends on the road. Confused much 🙂 Glad to see you can get a bit further afield, we loved the Ashmollian Museum in Oxford but doubt thats open yet x

Good thing that I live in Australia where the road signs depict koalas, kangaroos and crocodiles at road crossings to remind drivers to be ware that they are taking their lives in their own hands when they get behind the steering wheel. Thanks for supplying me with a laugh. I needed that!

I’m sorry but if someone’s ECG looks like that they are not having a great time hahaha.

So glad you can get out and explore now!
