Waco

After the sticky start to Texas, we’ve done some serious hours and miles. Other than HUGE – so far, Texas hasn’t been what I was expecting (cattle ranches and oil rigs 😊). Saw a couple of steers and small oil rigs but that’s about it.  Also VERY flat and the mountains that kept popping up randomly and ALWAYS visible on our travels so far – gone!!

Was nice to be out of the desert though and to see some rivers and greenery again. Also TREES!!! We haven’t seen trees on this scale since Cali Highway 1.

Everyone we’ve met along the way has told us to go to Waco and to go to “Magnolia”. In summary, a couple by the name of Joanna & Chip are famous from a TV Show called “Fixer Upper” – they have created a very successful business that apart from renovating houses, includes a retail store, a restaurant and a bakery at a site called “Magnolia Markets” where there are also several food trucks selling delicious, reasonably priced food.  Very glad we stopped by here and had a bite to eat at one of the food trucks.

Also popped into Waco Mammoth National Monument. This is where they stumbled across a Columbian Mammoth nursery and have partially excavated a couple of Mammoths (and also found a camel and a couple of other critters). Pics below and you can read more here if you want.
