Mexico Unfiltered
We had a rocky start but after abandoning the Airbnb, we found there is much to love about Mexico – well Puerto Vallarta anyway.
We Loved …
The people – friendly and have a great sense of humour
A$7.00 for Woodfire Pizza (big enough for 2 for dinner)
Cheap Cocktails
Cheap Groceries
The beautiful mountains
The cheap T-Shirts (Jarrah)
The VIP Cinema experience
The DELICIOUS freshly baked CHEAP confectionery
Yummy Prawn Tacos (you guessed it … cheap)
Did I mention the beautiful mountains?!
ARRACHERA!! (aka skirt steak) – WHY haven’t I heard of this before – so tender and tasty!!! Snap survey – please comment below … Have you had/heard of skirt steak?
The weather – not too hot, nor too cold during winter. Appears to be a “reasonable” temp in summer.
Not so much ….
The drivers
The traffic
Our Airbnb in Bucerias
Being offered Coffee, Coffee, and more COFFEE
Being offered Beer, Beer and more BEER
Coffee flavoured Tea – don’t ask! 🙂
Just is …
Jarrah’s name posed a real challenge for the locals – I suppose partly because it is an unusual name and partly because a J (especially at the start of a name) is usually pronounced as an H.
The pros far outweigh the cons … I’ll be back!
Last but not least, I decided to have my wild, woolly hair cut while we were still in Mexico. My desire for a cheap hair cut was greater than my fear of a bad hair cut due to my lack of Spanish. Well … it all worked out wonderfully!! Not only did the hairdresser speak great English, he was obviously highly experienced and gave me an excellent cut! Hair is a tad shorter than I ordinarily would have it but it’ll last me longer than my usual 4 weeks. Shampoo and cut cost A$20! Three haircuts for the price of half a hair cut! 🙂 He was so good, Jarrah decided to have her hair cut too (long layers and a trim to the length – see next post for pic).

Yummy those cakes etc. look delicious. I have heard of skirt steak a few times on cooking shows. Mexico sounds & looks fab. Great haircut too by the way.

Yay love the hair & yumm, those prawn Tacos look so tasty, think I will try find a recipe !!! – I had heard of Skirt Steak but only in the US so you will probably see it again real soon 🙂 Really interested to read your comments as I have to be honest I always thought Puerto Vallarta would be super touristy, good to have a balanced viewpoint. Xx

Yeah, it is touristy Deb but not as bad as Gold Coast for example. Also – very few people spoke English (much less than everywhere else we’d been up to now) and we found a local shopping centre, grocery store and laundromat within 2 blocks of the hotel. I think it’s got a nice balance – wouldn’t necessarily want to live at the beach in the thick of it all – but maybe suburbs at the base of the mountains (although they may be a tad too rustic? Would have to investigate) 🙂 Would like to return and also visit the Caribbean side – in particular a place called Tulum and also visit some mountain towns.
Forgot to mention in the post – lots of hotels with restaurants/bars on the beach, thought we’d go for a meal at one of them one day – were told we weren’t allowed to eat at the restaurant unless we bought a “day pass” for approx US$35! (that just allows us on to the premises)

Yep, heard of skirt steak – Im a dairy farmers daughter (?) – delicious, along with all the other tasty pic of food here – should not have read these gallivanting gypsies latest until after I had had my tea….BTW, thumbs up for the haircut!
