Rio Celeste Waterfalls

We were up at dawn (almost) on Saturday mroning for a 2.5hr drive to Tenorio Volcano National Park to hike to the Rio Celeste Waterfall. The pool at the base of the waterfall as well as the river have aluminosilicate particles in the water which helps to create an optical phenomenon called Mie Scattering … in a nutshell means only blue tones of white light are reflected – resulting in the most stunning blue water. No photoshop, no filters … just is!!

We then went for lunch in Baijagua and took a walk around a small, privately owned animal sanctuary where we saw SLOTHS, howler monkeys, red eye tree frogs and gorgeous morpheus butterflies – brown on the outside, stunning blue on the inside. Who, by the way, love alcohol. So they put fermented pineapple out to attract them.

Footage (below) of mumma Sloth with her baby … commentary courtesy of our wonderful guide, Kevin.

Last, but not least, we said Auf Wiedersehen to our “house-mates”, Tom and Christopher on Saturday night. Looking forward to catching up in Germany in August … or September … or sometime 🙂

Giggle for the day:
Being somewhat delirious from the early start and walking about 5,000km, we were going to order a ham and cheese pizza for dinner, then decided the ham looked a bit suspect – so ordered HAM and mushroom instead!!

Doh!!

The colour of that water is amazing, so envious of all that lush green foliage. Would love some of those frogs to put in the pond. Had a good chuckle about the ham , must be too much holiday.

They had rain for the two previous days – down here at the coast it is very dry and the drive to the Volcano was very similar to South African veld – dry grassy plains. Apparently Costa Ricas has approximately 10 micro-climates so the vegetation varies quite dramatically from one region to another.
