Croatia

Zadar & Rab

Sun was shining on the day we cruised to Zadar – can’t remember when that was. Anchored close to land of some description and swam off the back of the boat in the ocean, so clear you can see the bottom, fishes, sea urchins and cucumbers.

Had a walking tour of Zadar which was very interesting, I’d share some of it with you, except I can’t remember any of it 🙂 But another lovely little town surrounded by ancient walls and oozing with history.

Zadar’s biggest tourist attraction is the Sea Organ. You can read about it here and even listen to what it sounds like.

Zadar claims to have “the best sunsets in the World” – I’ll leave you to decide.
Another installation by Croatian architect Nikola Bašić (the chap who designed the Sea Organ) is the Monument to the Sun – a light display powered by solar panels. You can read more here.

We had another swim stop today, where Jarrah went on a thingo pulled behind the speedboat – you’ll see what I mean here:

Next stop was Rab Island – another delightful little place. Can highly recommend Croatia as a holiday destination; beautiful, quaint little towns, people are so friendly and some of the most stunning scenery you’ll see.

We had a walking tour of Rab – not of the same calibre as Urtz’s Walking Tours in Germany of course, but nevertheless very interesting.

Rab’s claim to fame, amongst other things is Rab Cake (Rabska Torta). Was made by the Benedictine nuns for some Pope when he visited in the 11th Century and its been famous ever since.
We went to a “tasting” where they also demonstrated how to make it and where we had a chance to give it a go. I had heard previously that it is made with almonds, so was worried it may be marzipan but thankfully not. It is quite delicious and will give it a try sometime in the future.

Found this recipe on “Catchmycake.com” (you’re welcome!) – it’s traditional to make it in the shape of a snail, but that can be tricky, they also make them in short rectangles, small round and heart-shaped cakes which is easier to do …. I speak from experience 🙂

It’s basically an almond frangipane filling with a base and edges made from very thinly rolled pasta, then baked. Let me know if you make it. Delicious!

No to the baking in this home but Jarrah’s ride looked fun … officially described as a sea biscuit and the laughter I heard on the video, sums up everyone who has ridden one. The water sounds beautiful and Croatia looks the same. 🥳

Yum, never heard of the cake and had not visited the picturesque town. You and Jarrah are so lucky. Take care and be COVID safe! The sea looks so inviting. Can’t wait for warm weather here so I can go back in the ocean again. Take care and keep on having good times and exciting or wonderous new experiences. What an amazing life you and jarrah are leading at the moment.

Truly Sandy…..have I read a number of ‘oh poor me’ referrals to scales that give you incorrect weight readings -something is amiss here! There’s some skinny head of hair bouncing around on the new “thingo” shedding machine with sweat & cocktail/consumed yummy cakes being flung savagely into that turquoise tepid water while she clings – with sparrow like fingers – and with amazing strength considering…..and being video’d without a squeak of ‘ H e l p.’
May I take the liberty of suggesting that had you tried this form of wonder weight waste, you would have to head back to Florence to source a leather belt.
And the sweet stick-like figure with the squiggly hair and bruises could have video’d some of it for our entertainment between her peals of laughter and holding her belly. One must really assess these thing Sandy – an opportunity lost is a weight-gain!!

    🥺🤭🤣

I’m assuming Jarrah’s thought patterns were … don’t die, don’t die, don’t die, don’t die!!! But well done maintaining hold!!!

And yes – I am definitely making that cake!!!

He battled to get her off, hence why you hear him going faster and faster. She was in a serious amount of pain for the next two days – not sure she’ll rush back to do that again 🙂 (Apparently she wasn’t in a rush to do it the first time, her mother volunteered her).

Make sure I’m around when you make the cake!

Well I’m not just making it the first time for you. I’ll have a crack or two first to make sure I get it down. I WILL send pictures though!
