Mali Lošinj

Second port and day three of our cruise saw more rain, wind etc – so no swim stops again and arrived in port early. A young couple, living in Germany, but from Ukraine and Kazakhstan originally, took pity on Jarrah (!) travelling with her mother (and because they are going stir crazy being the only “youngsters” on board) and invited Jarrah to walk around the town with them.

Unfortunately for them, the heavens opened up once more so they took refuge in a cafe and returned a tad soaked. Meanwhile I took a walk into town to find a pharmacy to buy Dramamine because Jarrah was very nauseous this morning with seasickness.

The next morning, we left later than usual so that we could go to a museum that was not open the previous day and that is dedicated to just one exhibit, a statue found in the sea called Apoxyomenos. You can read the fascinating story here (too long to go into in this blog).

He is kept in an all white room (floors are also white glass with lighting from below), where you are accompanied by a museum employee, are only allowed to stay a maximum of 5 minutes and no photos allowed within the room. You can only take pics from the strategically placed portholes into the room.

Today was the first day that the weather was decent enough to stop for a swim. But we anchored offshore at some place (they didn’t tell us where) and could either swim in the ocean or be taken ashore to a tiny beach where they left us for an hour. Water was warm and clear, the beach wasn’t anything special and quite badly littered with plastics of all shapes and sizes. Did see a few little fish in the water though.

We spent the night in Zapuntel on the Island of Molat. The harbour has nothing but a tiny kiosk (which was closed anyway), so a Captain’s dinner was scheduled for tonight.

We had a four course dinner, with a bottle of local white wine for the table and somehow after dinner, it turned into a bit of a DIY karaoke night (mobile phones, internet and boat sound system), where we took turns to play and sing along to a song from our home country – we chose “Down Under” by Men at Work of course.

The people on the boat are mainly Croatians, one Slovenian, the aforementioned young couple from Germany, a Czech couple, a German family, a Swiss couple and a couple from London (originally from Egypt and Lebanon).

Hi ladies, Sorry to hear the weather has not cooperated much for you in Yugoslavia and/or all the names the various parts of the old Yugoslavia now have. The towns look quaint and the sea is lovely. In the end, you are having much more adventure than any of us here in Oz. Highlight of our month has been a trip to Jervis Bay in the new SUV with mum, Maddy, Jason, the 2 puppies and the cat to a lovely beach house for the weekend 🙂 We did not have to reserve a spot on the beach (long and empty) or hire a beach chair (there are none). The dogs loved the ocean and the sand and we all had a lovely weekend away. Temperatures have been unexpectedly high the past week (30 degrees yesterday)- love it, but not a good sign for our planet.

Love hearing about your travels, your adventures and the people you are meeting, places you are seeing and food/drinks you are consuming, the witty, Sandy-unique commentary AND THE PHOTOS! Thank you Jarrah (and mum).

Me again – thank you for the link to the history of the Apoxyomenos statue. How awesome is it that there is man made (as well as natural – even more miraculous) stuff from thousands of years ago that we are still unearthing, or unoceaning, in this case. Fascinating story. Thanks!
