Germany

Romantische Straße

We did a bit of a back-track from Nuremburg in order to visit two towns on the “Romantic Road” – Dinkelsbühl and Rothenburg ob der Tauber.

Dinkelsbühl is the smaller of the two, founded in 1531 and one of the archetypal towns which give the German Romantic Road its character. It is one of the only remaining walled medieval towns in Germany.

Dinkelsbühl also comes complete with a family of storks (we could see the babies) – living high up in a nest made possible by a man-made structure provided for them. Unfortunately, you’re going to have to take my word for it because the camera doesn’t have a decent zoom and the pic I got with my iPhone isn’t exactly pretty (read: lots of bird shit) 🙂

Sadly more reminders of the holocaust – this time an entire family. Palma (48), Josef (43), Martha (38) and the children Jost (9), Max (8) and Beatrix (7) when they were deported and murdered (“Ermodet”).

Rothenburg ob der Tauber is similar to Dinkelsbühl but, in my opinion, better. Lots more ginger-bread type houses, and narrow, cobbled streets (I’m a sucker for cobbled streets, have you noticed?) – also church bells, love to hear church bells.

Of course, no trip to Rothenburg would be complete without a visit to the Christmas Shop (with its iconic vintage car parked out front). It is absolutely huge – we weren’t meant to be taking pics in there, but Jarrah managed to take a few sneaky snaps.

Daily Giggle
Mum grabbing my knee instead of the gear stick, even though it was nowhere near it, and then shouting “MOVE!!” as if she hadn’t just missed the gear shift entirely

Compared to these beautiful towns, our architecture is very boring – quite bland. These pics are magnificent! Definitely had a giggle at the gear stick mishap! Lots of love to you both. xx

Trivia of the day: Some of the scenes from Chitty Chitty Bang Bang (1968) were actually shot in Rothenburg ob der Tauber.

Such beautiful towns with great colours. Think Mom & Dad went to Dinkelsbuhl. That Christmas shop looked amazing.

Oh my gosh! How gorgeous. Tomorrow is the fourth of July (Independence Day in the U.S.) I feel like I got to celebrate it in Dinkelsburg. So beautiful. And so poignant to see the commemorations of the families who were forcibly displaced and gassed to death by the insane, inhuman and horrid Nazis. And also how very heartbreaking to remember that children, as well as adults, perished under such horrific conditions. Love to the two of you and Congratulations to Jarrah on her photography inside the Christmas store!
