Danube Cruise
On Tom’s recommendation, we drove to Kelheim (about a 30 min drive from Regensburg) and took a cruise down the Danube to Weltenburg.
The day had started off rather chilly and raining but cleared up beautifully for a leisurely float down the river and through the gorge.
The Liberation Hall stands on Michelsberg high above the Danube at Kelheim. The rotunda is massive and houses the statues of the 34 gods of victory as a memorial of the victorious battles against Napoleon in the Wars of Liberation during 1813-1815 and commissioned by King Ludwig I (who was a very busy chap – many stories and statues of him yesterday).
Cruise ends at Weltenburg Abbey which also has a brewery and restaurant. We didn’t get off though as we were pressed for time.
The trip down to the Abbey goes against the current and takes 45 minutes, the return journey is a speedy 20 minutes.

Ludwig was actually the single most influencing factor to establish a Bavarian and German identity, after the German empire had lost its power in the early 19th century. So yes, very busy man indeed. Fun fact of the day: the Oktoberfest goes back to his marriage, so all the drunken people every year are celebrating the marriage of the most famous Bavarian emperor in 1810.
