Miniatur Wunderland

Let me tell y’all about the unbelievably adorable experience of the Miniature Wunderland in Hamburg, Germany! I’m an absolute SUCKER for tiny models of big things, and I don’t really know why – I guess I was just born this way. There’s something so peaceful about staring down at a tiny itty-bitty town complete with moving vehicles and an assortment of landscapes, as well as COUNTLESS tiny people doing a variety of activities! All I can say is that if this post doesn’t melt your heart, I do not trust you as a person, and can no longer have you in my life.

I mean just LOOK at it!

The level of detail in each section is practically impossible to capture, you could easily spend 24 hours in the Wunderland and you still wouldn’t discover every single hidden gem. Also, every 15 minutes or so, the displays change to night time, and they’ve put so much thought into the tiny details that even the streetlights flicker before turning on, just like a real street would. The thing that amazes me is that they could have chosen not to include a night time at all, or had lights that came on all at once, or had stationary cars and buses, and it still would have been fantastic, but they chose to go the extra mile, which really brings all the individual cities to life. They put a gargantuan effort into things that could be easily missed if you don’t look close enough.

When people ask me what the highlight of my year has been, the answer will be easy: me wondering out loud if an oncoming teeny tiny truck is going to come to a teeny tiny stop if the teeny tiny traffic lights turn teeny tiny red, and then proceeding to practically cry tears of joy as it did exactly that.

The Wunderland also had a pretty impressive airport, complete with planes that actually take off and land!

Las Vegas at day and night:

With all the moving trucks, boats, planes, trains, and automobiles, as well as the occasional animal or human, it comes as no surprise that the Wunderland has a pretty intense control centre – the photo gives you an idea of how complex it looks, but doesn’t quite capture it in its entirety:

While we were waiting for a plane to land at the airport, suddenly a random bee-shaped plane came hilariously buzzing through the wall out of nowhere – there were quite a few different creatures (dragons, fairies, centaurs, etc) hidden throughout the Wunderland, which just goes to show that the employees/artists clearly have a great sense of humour that shines through their work.

Wow! And wow!! I’m with you there – there are no words to describe how amazing this is! The Nightscape scene – it could be the view out of any hotel window in many countries of the world. It looks so lifelike! Spectacular!

Soooo. I was there about 2.5 yrs ago. And everything you’ve pointed out is spot on. But there is one additional note I’d like to add. This whole pandemic thing has been a real drag, BUT … that museum was absolutely RAMMED full of people during my visit. So actually being able to get decent pictures of the buildings was a bit of a challenge, as you were constantly jockeying with all varieties of families, school visits, tourists, random kids running hither & tither. My guess is there were not as many people to contend with during your visit. But I’m really happy you got to see this!!

You’re right – numbers were severely restricted due to COVID and we were lucky to get tickets. However, even with those reduced numbers, we hot-footed it to the other side of the display as the start was getting crowded. I commented to Jarrah while we were there how hectic it must be under normal circumstances.

LOVE the Minatur Wolrd! Especially Venice, Amalfi Coast and the Jacuzzi! Makes me yearn for a holiday. Is the desert with the cars in Arizona on Route 66? Hamburg looks so neat and tidy and such cool architecture. Did you eat the entire pizza J??

    Love to y’all.
